Above Board Pros is a family business. We live in the Midwest, we hire in the Midwest, and we built this platform at our own kitchen table, without venture money, because the big contractor directories stopped working for the people we know.
We watched neighbors get burned. Fake reviews, resold leads, contractors who ranked because they paid, not because they were good. So we built the thing we wished existed: a directory that checks contractor status against official state business registries where our automated check reaches, and shows you exactly what it found.

A Person Reads the File (Tier 1 Badge)
Contracted pros with active accounts. Before an account is switched on, someone on our team opens the state business registry record where our automated check reaches and reads the certificate of insurance line by line, taking carrier, coverage amount, and expiration date straight off the certificate. Your request goes here first.
State Record Cross-Check (Tier 2 Badge)
Our AI screening layer looks each contractor up in the official state business registry and reads back their registration number and standing. In the states our automated check reaches, a match puts a Gov. DB Verified badge on the listing, with the date it was checked.
Website Evidence Scan (Tier 3 Badge)
We also read the contractor’s own website for credential claims. That is weaker evidence, so it earns a lower-confidence badge, kept visually separate from a confirmed state record. Every contractor in the directory has been through this scan.
Business Signals
Alongside credentials we pull BBB records, Google reviews, and years in business, so a listing carries more than a badge. You can browse and contact these pros directly. A listed pro who sets up an account can also receive requests, without the Tier 1 human review.
When Not Enough Partners Match
If not enough partners in your area match your project, your request may also go to a national fulfillment network so your project still gets bids. We do not screen these networks or the pros they send you. Our screening covers the pros we list, and nothing else.
What You See, and What's On You
Every listing shows which checks it passed and when. A credential we have not confirmed is not quietly implied: the listing says the status is not yet verified, or that the contractor has not been reviewed at all. For any pro you did not find in our listings, run your own checks before you sign. Ask for the state registration number, ask for a current certificate of insurance, and look the contractor up in your state's official records.
