Decorating your child’s room is not always the easiest job. You may have little direction if your child is too young to let you know what they want or if they don’t have an interest in what the room looks like. Or you may have the opposite problem and your child has so many ideas for the décor that you don’t even know where to start. These are some great tips for decorating a kid’s room that can help you get started.

Instead of a Theme, Decorate Around a Child’s Interests
You don’t want to just randomly pick a theme for your kid’s bedroom. If your child is old enough to have some specific interests or collections of items, then decorate around those instead. This ensures that the room will mean more to the child, and this way, they may not grow tired of it so quickly. If you have a son who just loves the beach, for example, you can also do some stripes and checks in his room. Then use his seashell collection or pictures of the beach as part of the décor. If your daughter loves her dolls, you might try to build something around that. Try picking out some fabrics that coordinate with the dolls and then base the décor off that.

Keep It Simple and Allow Your Child to Change the Room Often
Kids will often change their minds from one minute to the next. One day your daughter may be all about Hannah Montana, yet the next day she may not be able to stand her and you find that she has already moved on to something else. So instead of having to completely redecorate your child’s room every time you turn around, try to keep the basics of the room really simple so that they can decorate and redecorate as they wish. Simply paint the walls a neutral color or a color that you know they won’t want to change for a while. Then you can simply step back and let them hang the pictures and posters they want and accessorize however they like. Then, if they like, one week they can have Hannah Montana pictures up and the next week, the Jonas Brothers.

Be Sure to Add as Much Storage Space as Possible
Inevitably, over the years your kids are going to collect a lot of stuff and this stuff will all have to be stored in their rooms. That’s why it’s so important to provide them with plenty of storage space, so they have a place to put it away and out of sight. Get creative with the storage areas you provide. Put bins under the mission bed and give them plenty of drawers to organize items in. In order to keep your child’s room somewhat organized and not overflowing with things, you need to provide as much storage and organizational space as possible. Pick wooden dressers with plenty of drawers to organize items in.

Think About the Future When Decorating
If you are planning on staying in your home for several years, you need to take this into consideration when decorating your child’s bedroom. If you’re like most parents, you’re not going to want to change the room every few years, so you need to think about the future when planning the room. Remember, you child is not going to be five forever. Someday he may be 13 or 14 and won’t want that Superman wallpaper anymore. So when picking your decorating theme, consider how many years you want the décor to last before you have to change it.

Decorating your child’s room can be a whole lot of fun, especially since it gives you an excuse to spend time with your child and learn more about them. But do keep these tips in mind. That way, you will get the best you can out of your kid’s bedroom décor.
